hi everyone, my name is Abu Danladi, i am an international student from Ghana. i am a first year political science major here at UCLA. i am really excited to learn more about how art and science go together because i never thought that these two had anything in common and i sure this class will tell me how they work together.
Week 1: Two Cultures
Coming into this class i honestly have strong ideas of what art is but have a very small knowledge about science. i learnt a lot about art is high school. what i didn't consider was how art and science go hand in hand and what can happen if they are separated. As Freeman Dyson a theoretical physicist and mathematician, quoted that, "Science is a human activity, and the best way to understand it is to understand the individual human beings who practise it. Science is an art form and not a philosophical method. The great advances in science usually result from new tools rather than from new doctrines. ... Every time we introduce a new tool, it always leads to new and unexpected discoveries, because Nature's imagination is richer than ours." This shows how science in itself is a form art and people should recognize and see the importance of how these two cultures are different but how one cane be found in another. after reading about Victoria Vesna's article about the "two cultures" shows the bridge between these two cultures and the Third Culture which was spoken about by C.P snow, which will bridge these two culture together.
As a foreign student here at UCLA, i sometimes feel like i am in involved in two world as well. i am student athlete as sometimes feel like i am living two different lives.

This is a link to a video of Fabian Oefner a very talented photographer based in Switzerland whose work marries visual aesthetics and science. Most of the work he does is based on bring science and art together. in this videos he explains how he connects science with art.
These ideas of i got from reading the articles and watching video on youtube makes realize that nothing is impossible and that anything can work if you put your mind to it. if science and art can be put together, then i can make anything i set my mind to do to also work as well.
